My job as Epi’s product reviews editor necessitates that my kitchen is bursting with gear: knives, pans, toasters that fall along various points on the artificial intelligence spectrum. But there are a handful of pieces in my cabinets that predate my time at Epi—hell, they predate my whole career writing about food. They are the happy discoveries of a young home cook learning how to transition himself away from frozen Trader Joe’s entrées. I continue to reach for them every day.
The prime example of this is my angled Oxo four-cup liquid measuring cup. I know, I know, that does not sound exciting or sexy, and it’s absolutely not. But it is the best-designed tool for the one kitchen task I do every day I cook, whether I’m making a complicated, labor-intensive stew or just a pot of rice.
Like so many Oxo products, the design is just a little better, a little smarter, and a little more user-friendly than anything else in its category (as we have to periodically remind readers, we at Epi come by our love of Oxo honestly). The cup can be read either from the side (like most clear measuring cups) or from the top. I cannot emphasize enough how much easier that makes this to use than every other graduated measuring cup. It’s marked in cups (subdivided into ⅓, ½, ⅔, and ¾ measures), milliliters (subdivided every 50 ml up to 1000), and ounces. It also has a spout, making it clean and easy to pour from.
I don’t actually use it to measure to its full four-cup capacity very often, and Oxo does make these angled cups in a variety of sizes—there’s a set with a one-, two-, and four-cup. But it’s just as easy to measure a cup and a half as it is to measure four cups in the big version, so you don’t have to clutter your cabinets with a bunch of measuring cups in various sizes.
One caveat: I am on my second angled measuring in nine years as the handle came off after four years of constant use and runs through the dishwasher. But a piece of plastic kitchen equipment lasting around half a decade is actually pretty impressive. And the ease of measuring in this compared to a glass liquid measuring cup really makes up for the fact that you might need to replace it every five years or so.
If you cook, you’re going to measure ingredients. Do yourself a favor and start measuring them the easy way.
